The 2020 Credit Union Youth Month Collection of Resources

It is hard to believe that May is upon us. In April, we witnessed some of the most inspiring acts of kindness and selflessness that our world has ever seen but the month of April also brought with it tremendous uncertainty, loss and sadness. Our industry has come together like never before and through the heartache we have seen hundreds of thousands of people working together to ensure a bright future still lay before us. Interestingly, April was National Credit Union Youth Month, and no one needs hope for a bright future like the youth of today.

“Money Magic! Share, Spend and Save at Your Credit Union” was the official theme for this year’s National Credit Union Youth Month. This initiative is meant to motivate kids to develop healthy monetary habits and to make it exciting, enjoyable and fun for them. Whether it is starting a piggy bank, donating to a local charity, planning for college or balancing a household budget, this is a perfect time to start talking about what financial responsibility looks like.

Many of our incredible industry partners and colleagues have developed and shared their best resources for motivating children and educating them about the matters of money. In fact, we think Michael Murdoch, a communications specialist at Wauna Federal Credit Union, said it best: “Credit Union Youth Month is more than just a time to recognize members, it’s a time to champion healthy financial habits, strengthen the integrity of your shop and showcase your devotion to the betterment of others.”

The COVID-19 crisis has affected so many, physically, emotionally, and financially and this does not exclude our youth. With schools closed and parents at home, budgets have tightened, which causes questions and concerns. So, now more than ever, it is our responsibility to talk to our children, listen to them and then teach them healthy habits. These kinds of conversations can be tough, and we don’t always know what to say. But with an entire industry full of support, we’re happy to share some of the wonderful resources to help you get started.
